Who qualifies for legal aid from Jushjelpa i Midt-Norge?

Jushjelpa i Midt-Norge primarily exists to provide assistance to particularly vulnerable groups and individuals in difficult situations—parties who normally cannot get help through regular legal aid services. If you qualify for free legal aid, or if you have the means to obtain a regular attorney, we will ask you to use these options.

Which services do we offer?

Jushjelpa i Midt-Norge provide legal advice and information to clients. In addition, we can represent you in communication with the opposing party outside of court, both verbally and in writing. We also take part in negotiations with the opposing party, which is most common in labour disputes and tenancy cases. Negotiations at an early stage could however, help resolve the conflict at the earliest stage of mediation in other branches of law as well.

Furthermore, we represent clients before the Conciliation Board, the Rent Disputes Tribunal, the National Insurance Court, as well as the Court of Enforcement in Trondheim. The majority of our cases commence in Trondheim. However, Jushjelpa I Midt-Norge has on several occasions attended hearings before the Conciliation Board outside of Trondheim, including Skaun, Rissa, and Stjørdal.

We offer free legal advice and provide legal aid to people all over Norway, but most of our inquiries are from clients from Central Norway. We accept all types of cases, except cases involving criminal law or tax law.

Jushjelpa’s objectives:

We aim to provide legal advice to people who would otherwise not be able to obtain legal assistance. Jushjelpa i Midt-Norge has a social profile and primarily helps those who need it most.

Through various political initiatives, we hope to reach a wider audience by giving information about their legal rights and obligations. We aim to contribute to dispute prevention. By taking this approach, we hope to be able to help more people and be more effective than if we only were to intervene in individual cases.
Another important objective for us is to give law students in Trondheim an opportunity to practice law during their education. We emphasize in-house training, so that our employees can give our clients the best possible help. It is important to us that our clients are not put at a disadvantage simply because they cannot afford to obtain an attorney.

Jushjelpa i Midt-Norge provided legal aid to approximately 3000 people last year.

Jushjelpa i Midt-Norge, originally called Studentjushjelpa, was established in 1991 with the help of the Student Welfare Organization in Trondheim (SiT), in response to an initiative from the city’s law students. Initially, we only accepted students as clients. During the first year, the five students who worked for Studentjushjelpa handled 28 cases. Since then, the number of cases and number of employees have increased considerably. In 1997, we extended our services to include non-students, and today we are proud to offer free legal advice to people all over the country. In 2017, we accepted 3318 cases, and in 2018 we hope that the number of cases will increase even further.

Jushjelpa i Midt-Norge is located at Bispegata 9C, close to the County Governor and Birralee International School Trondheim.
